Why was my life never the same again?
The rest of the story.
After Zig told that story I knew that I would never be the same again. I left that auditorium knowing that I could be more than a maintenance manager, more than someone afraid of his shadow, more than someone whose self-esteem was so low that I would not lift up my head to say hello unless you said hello first.
After that talk I was never the same again. That was the small step that changed my life.
We have all been flea trained.

How can a story change a life?
How did this step change my life?
As I mentioned in the last step I went to hear Zig Ziglar speak despite the ridicule of my friends. Zig held up a jar of fleas and said that he was the world’s champion flee trainer. He went on the explain that if you put fleas in a jar they would jump and jump and jump always hitting their heads on the top of the jar. Eventually they would get tired of hitting their heads and they would jump just high enough not to bump their heads. You could take the lid off the jar and they would never jump out.
The purpose of the illustration is to show that we have been flea trained to believe that we cannot get out of the jar. We can’t get a better job. We can’t start our own company. We can’t make it on our own? The failure rate is so high. You won’t make it. We can’t, we can’t, we can’t. You can’t, you can’t, you can’t.
Come back tomorrow for the rest of the story.

The rest of the story
The rest of the story:
Was going to hear Zig Ziglar a big step or a small step? It was a small step and it changed my life big time. Zig Ziglar gave me a new vision of me.
That's what this series is all about. It's about taking small steps to success. There is no quantum leap to success, no sudden breakthrough, you don't wake up one morning and there you are a success. Success is a series of small steps taken everyday, everyday, everyday.
Success “Is the progressive realization of a worthy ideal.” It’s progressive, one step at a time, one small step at a time.

The step that changed my life
The step that changed my life:
This is the day that I will remember forever. I was maintenance manager at the Barrel Of Fun Potato Chip plant in Perham Minnesota. I was in the break room having coffee with a few of my friends and I told them that I was going to hear Zig Ziglar speak in Fargo. That was when the kidding really started. Who is this Zig Zag guy? What is he going to tell you, and on and on. But you know what? I went anyway.
